Stop Pushing Top Talent Out the Door

The Performance Improvement Blog

The tendency of some managers in a recessionary economy is to revert to a command-and-control style of leadership. This is risky business. Those managers risk creating a suboptimum work environment and driving out their top talent. Study after study provides evidence that employees perform best and stay longest when their bosses are respectful, listen to employees, and support high levels of engagement.

The two faces of blended learning

E-Learning Provocateur

What is blended learning? Well, it depends on who you ask. For example, someone might say it’s a mix of pedagogical approaches, while someone else might say it’s a mix of theory and practice. Most of us, though, say that blended learning is a mix of modes of delivery. And these days, there are certainly plenty to choose from! Two faces. In this age of technological nirvana, I think it’s important to recognise the two different faces of blended learning: 1.

Some accumulated thoughts…

Clark Quinn

I have had my head down cranking out the manuscript for my mobile learning book. The deadline for the first draft is breathing down my neck, and I’ve been quite busy with some client work as well. The proverbial one-armed paper hanger comes to mind. However, that does not mean my mind has been idle. Far from, actually. It’s just not been possible to find the time to do the thoughts justice.

Employee Surveys: How is as Important as What

The Performance Improvement Blog

An epidemic of employee surveys is killing knowledge and wisdom. Fueling this epidemic are two erroneous beliefs: 1) anyone can design and administer an employee survey effectively; and 2) the results of employee surveys are the property of management. I want to address each of these myths and maybe succeed in immunizing a few readers against further spread of the disease.

eLearning Outsourcing – How To Select A Vendor?

In my last post on eLearning Outsourcing, I mentioned the various advantages of eLearning outsourcing. Most people get the benefits part pretty easily however, identifying whom to outsource to is not as easy. When meeting prospects, I often face this objection – “ We have tried outsourcing in the past but have had a real bad experience and (hence) we are not willing to take the risk again “ What they fail to understand is that, in most of the cases, the problem lies much beneath

Some is not a number; soon is not a time! Today is my birthday. However, that is not the subject matter of this post. The subject matter is a book called Switch: How to Change Things When Change is Hard ! I finished reading it this afternoon. I call this fortuitous because I had not planned it such. However, when one completes a book that tells you how to change or bring about change and it coincides with your birthday, it does cause you to reflect a little more than usual.

Little Shots of Theory

Learning Visions

I’ve been having a lot of fun contributing articles and tips to the eLearning Top Tips section of the Kineo website. Recently, I’ve started a new sub-series series: Shots of Theory. This is me gaining more insight into our practice, but I must admit that theory always turns me off a bit. I’m a practical person; I like to know what works, I don’t want to get too bogged down in the theory and abstractions.

New round of training starts

Moodle Journal

Just into a new round of vle training in Moodle. We have now completed the rollout and trials. From experience of trying to deliver the basic course in year 1 and then move on to the more advanced features in the following year though seemed to not produce the desired effect. The problem appeared to be that if staff were slow to take up use of the vle fairly soon following the training, they seemed to loose confidence and I found them returning to the course again the next term or later.

Preamble: To briefly set the scenario, I had been involved in a project where an organization was rolling out e-learning for the first time, making a shift from pure instructor-led training (for the formal learning bit) to a web-based environment. The key people involved—the trainers, the business clients, managers, target learner groups—were all folks in their late forties and early fifties, and their average tenure in the organization was 15+ years.
