A couple of weeks back we posted about Silverlight posing some (at this time, actually little) competition to Flash. Now we have HTML 5 coming up – this makes the race hotter. Or does it? Those of you have heard of HTML 5 will know it’s a new version of HTML and XHTML being promoted by Google and Apple in a bid to move the web away from proprietary technologies like Flash, Silverlight and JavaFX.

Our team uses a wiki to document our design and development processes, something I wrote about in a short column for the eLearning Guild’s Learning Solutions magazine. This weekend I was imagining a conversation between two people about the benefits of a wiki. This overlaps quite a bit with the reasons in my article, but it’s a more fun presentation with Xtranormal.

Do we still care about instructional design? This graph from Google Trends compares searches for “elearning&# with searches for “instructional design.&#. At first, “elearning&# followed “instructional design&# in a sad slope downward. But in the last couple of years, “elearning&# has perked up again, while its friend “instructional design&# continues its descent into obscurity.

I can remember a project a few years ago where the subject matter expert (SME) fought and fought to include his 20-step process (complete with details and charts) in the course we were developing. He eventually persuaded his boss and won out, so we built the process into the course. Feedback from the learners was not positive and ranged from comments like "what is this and why in the world would I need to know it" on down to, shall we say, less positive remarks.

Recently I’ve been working on a Captivate tutorial to help our facilitators better understand the thought process of troubleshooting a specific part of their course setup. This is basically a software simulation with an avatar & audio. Most slides have a clickable area within the LMS interface. This click box has both a hint caption and a failure caption.

Class visits the Holocaust Museum in Second Life. This class consisted of three different parts. The first part we visited the exhibit at the US Holocaust Museum. The interactive nature of the exhibit and the interactions of the avatars with the exhibit made it a great educational place to visit. Holocaust Museum has some really well done effectives like fire and falling glass.

I'm a big fan of Google and I use Google's online applications on a daily basis. I've found the Google Calendar to be easy to use and easy to access at home, at work, and on the go. When I was recently asked to teach a class on how to use Google Calendar I started thinking about how to integrate it with Lectora. Having a calendar in your training can be useful for a variety of reasons.

I do a lot of presentations where one of the topics is how to use LinkedIn more effectively as part of your knowledge work. In most cases, I will ask for a show of hands: How many of you have a LinkedIn Account? - Generally 50-70%. How many of you actively use LinkedIn? – Generally down to 10%. How many of you get really high value from LinkedIn? - Now down to 2-5% I am continually surprised by this result ( Getting Value from LinkedIn ).

Training companies the world over are changing the way they operate and the services they offer customers. An important one is the inclusion of eLearning (or online training) as part of their core offerings for existing and new customers. Such an offering is not purely driven by a cost-saving strategy on the customer’s part, but is also due to the growing acceptance of eLearning as an effective way of delivering training.

Now that title should generate a ripple or two on the pond, especially when I have been so vocal about the need for just such a shift. So…is this post a confession that I have changed my mind? Not quite. Not even. If anything, I am more passionate than ever, but over the years, I have gotten smarter about moving around obstacles that stifle momentum rather than fight through immovable walls of opposition or resistance.

Last month Tony Karrer posted this interesting piece on the Business of Learning on his blog – eLearning Technology. It provoked a discussion on the topic with many different perspectives brought to bear. To follow-up on that discussion, Tony organized a free webinar on the Future of Learning as a Business last week. In last night’s #lrnchat , the topic was virtual worlds (VWs). This was largely because several of the organizers had recently attended one or another of the SRI/ADL meetings on the topic, but also because one of the organizers ( @KoreenOlbrish ) is majorly active in the business of virtual worlds for learning through her company Tandem Learning.

Helicopter Parents: Image courtesy The Telegraph, UK Helicopter parents, as we know, hover over kids, micromanaging every aspect of their lives. Unfortunately, like many other well-meaning actions, helicoptering can deliver more harm than good. Hot Lava, which was recently acquired by OutStart, is now offering a free version of their m-learning development tool. It is accessible at this link, Hot Lava download-registration. Here is also a description of Hot Lava. It is a full version and without any time limitations. My guess is that OutStart will be making significant improvements to the software, so why not offer the current version free as a teaser.
