For those of you unaware of DevLearn, the show has been around for years and is one of e-learning guild’s premier shows in my opinion. While there were LMS vendors present, this is a show more suited for authoring tool vendors, e-learning tool vendors and vendors who enhance or increase engagement in courses or content.

Well back to another expo conference installment – this time it is DevLearn Day 1. Oh, and we also do mobile with tablets, smartphones, and then there was some HTML5 mentioned in many authoring tool products and some of the LMS vendors and a few e-learning tools. The strange thing about this at DevLearn is the blame game.

It seemed so brain-dead simple to see how powerful and effective the learning experience was and yet we couldn't sell the continuation of the project to management. Designers could learn a LOT by simply mimicking the user controls of current MMORPGs. I often wonder what these other players would think if they knew she was only 8.

LXPs offer assigned learning. They, thus are not learner-centric, the moment the client decides to go assigned learning. The vast majority of LXPs today are within a learning platform, or an LMS or as an add-on option to either of those offerings. Higher than even Pluralsight, which is, uh, a learning platform.

I loved the use of networked laptops that allowed for multi-player simulations. So, basically the guy learning to drive the ship is impacted by the guy learning about the engine room in real time. Collaborative combat missions were obvious since junior high kids have access to multi-player warfare experiences.

Here at DevLearn 2011 in Las Vegas I've got authoring tools on my mind. It borrows much of the Microsoft Office look and feel, including the ribbon interface, so it's easy to learn, but inherits none of the limitations. Apart from games, e-learning is one of its last remaining niches. First up is Storyline from Articulate.
