Skills, competencies, and moving forward

I was asked, recently, about skills versus competencies. The context was an individual who saw orgs having competency frameworks, but only focusing on skill development. But then I could see where the emphasis should be on skills, competencies, and moving forward. And that, I suggest, comes from competencies beyond skills.

So I thought I’d rant, for a post, on what is involved in developing learning to learn skills. What are learning to learn skills? Most importantly, you have to develop the skills. Develop learning t0 learn skills consciously, and conscientiously. And I have to say that what I do see, seems inadequate.

Don’t take learning skills for granted!

While there are numerous components, including a culture that tolerates diversity and doesn’t punish honest mistakes, one that is easy to neglect the actual learning skills of employees. My ITA colleague Charles Jennings made a nice first pass at a list of useful skills. Social learning skills similarly should not be assumed.

Lack of skills

However, I’m working on a project to address digital literacy skills where the expert says experience shows that students are rather naive; they have some skills, but maybe not efficient and effective ones, and are missing others. Which makes the point that trusting to effective skills isn’t a fair expectation.
