Some three years ago, when I first started blogging, the consensus seemed to be that it was only a matter of time before everybody started blogging. blogs were updated in the last 120 days, 1.5m Blog postings differ enormously in character. So regular blogging is for mad enthusiasts and those with a professional interest.

Once you get in the swing of it, it is relatively straightforward to write a blog post. The best way that I've found to write a book one mouthful at a time is by conceiving of it as a part work, each edition being issued as a blog posting. The reality, for me at least, is very different.

Nowadays, the process is reversed: I blog first, then elaborate my favourite postings into columns. As a blogger I have evolved a definite publishing routine: I don't write about personal topics (glimpses into non-professional life can emerge through Facebook and Twitter). I aim to write twice a week. Tags: blogging.

When I started blogging, I saw it primarily as an activity for personal reflection, a way of clarifying and externalising my thoughts. And when you start blogging that's pretty well all you can do, because it takes time to attract readers. As a result, I came to the conclusion in 2009 that blogging is journalism , pure and simple.

We’re all headline writers now

When you’re confronted day after day by hundreds, if not thousands, of emails, tweets, status updates, blog posts and text messages, it’s amazing how skilful we become at weeding out the communications that deserve our attention. With emails and blog posts, our messages will never get read if the headlines are not sufficiently enticing.
