When I agreed to join as co-director of the Learning & Development Accelerator, I’d already attended their first two conferences. So here’s my thinking about designing a conference. Yes, technology requires resources, but not as much as collective travel. Which, in many ways, reflects what other conferences do.

Experimenting with conference design

And, what’s nice, is that they’re experimenting with conference design, not just moving straight online. To be fair, the Learning Guild has had a continual practice of trying different things at their conferences, and it’s been good. And their stated goal is changing the way we conference. And those are good.

Competing conference contexts

There are similarities, for example both are great conferences. Both conferences are also tech literate: there was free wifi, and both had a lively tweet stream. The online school area is, however, more sophisticated in their technology awareness. There are a lot of differences! mobile) and approaches (e.g. social).

Roger subsequently applied his thinking to education, writing Engines for Education (amongst other works), while leading a variety of efforts in using technology to support learning. I heard Roger speak at a Cog Sci conference I attended to present part of my dissertation research. I was a fan.
