As the doors open to a new era of mobile learning and performance support, it's a good time to step back and think about the new mindset required when designing for mobile. Although a mobile pedagogy will continue to evolve, we already know quite a bit about how people use mobile devices and some of the advantages of mobile learning. That's an old-fashioned and highly collaborative approach. | THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG MARCH 6, 2012 Using Twitter as a Professional Development Tool Last week during a discussion about design, Jeanette Campos asked me a fairly is simple question: What are the three artifacts that have shaped you most as a designer of creative learning solutions to complex problems? Immediately one word came to mind: Twitter. It isn't the tool itself that has been so impact full for me; it's the world to which Twitter opened up to me. started my career as a learning and performance professional much the same way many in our field do: without any training or education on what it means to work in this field. recall those early years well. Put another way. | | | | | | | THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG MARCH 20, 2012 Curation: A Core Competency for Learning Professionals In my first two posts for Learning Circuits, I explored how I use Twitter as a professional development tool , and last week we looked at Filtering: A Challenge and Responsibility for Learning Professionals. This week we're going to explore filtering further, and explain how learning professionals will provide filtering services on an increasing basis. There are two primary ways that filtering will impact learning professionals. The first impact is in helping workers understand the need and techniques for filtering. For many, this need to filter is something they may not have considered before. | THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG JULY 1, 2010 Brain Learning and eLearning Design David Grebow suggested this month's Big Question (thanks David). There's been a lot of discussion around cognitive theory and "how the brain learns." I've been to a lot of conference sessions around this and I've captured a bunch of really great resources below. So the July Question is: Does the discussion of "how the brain learns" impact your eLearning design? | THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG JULY 30, 2012 Let's stop pretending I think I may have mentioned this before, but I work with researchers - people who spend time living in data and coming up for air only when they have actionable insights in tow. In some ways this has been a bracing change of pace for me, and for the most part it has been very interesting to witness. don't think any of my colleagues in Rosslyn would put it this way, but I like to think that the unspoken refrain in this kind of work is: look - really look - at what is in front of you. stop pretending that things are otherwise. act accordingly. Rinse. Repeat. like this idea a lot. from a tool.or | THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG FEBRUARY 20, 2012 10 Visual Design Quick Tips eLearning and slide presentations are highly visual mediums. The visual clarity of screens and slides can have a big impact on learning. If you're unsure what to do and how to go about designing the visuals for a training environment, here are some quick tips that might help. Visual Design is Problem Solving You solve problems all day long and you're probably pretty good at it. Keep practicing | | | | | | | | | -
THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 Voice-Over in eLearning Over the past couple of months, Dr. Joel Harband has been teaching me all about Using Text-to-Speech in eLearning. This has been a great way for me to learn about the topic. However, there was a comment on one of my posts that made me realize that the discussion of the use of voice-over in eLearning was far beyond the conversation that Joel and I were having. The comment was: Even the best Text-to-Speech can only do one thing - receive text and spit it back out. There is no substitute for a professional voice talent, who can interpret the meaning and message of your e-learning scripts. MORE >> -
THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG | MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 2012 What is Gamification? and Why it Matters to L&D Professionals In my last posting I mentioned the idea of “Gamification” and Anna thoughtfully pointed out that we need to “ define what "gamification" means to learning development. I couldn’t agree more and I have spent the last year exploring that concept to see what Gamification does mean to learning and development professionals. For more on this, see my posting In Defense ofthe Term Gamification as used by Learning Professionals on Kapp Notes , and be sure to read the insightful and provocative comments. So on this posting, let’s define Gamification. Stories bring context back. Games MORE >> -
THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2012 10 Ways to Bring A Conference Back to Work When it comes to conferences, a better slogan would be, "What happens in Vegas should NOT stay in Vegas." If you're one of the fortunate people from your organization to attend a professional conference, how can you bring it back to the workplace so everyone can benefit? During sessions, keynotes, hallway conversations and after-hours discussions, many great ideas are tossed around. Don't let them stay in Vegas! Share them when you get back. The pressure of knowing that you'll need to convey the best of the conference tends to help a person plan ahead. Then this approach is for you. MORE >> - Can Higher Education Afford Innovation?
So.this whole week I was pretty excited about the idea of riding the interest from my last two blogposts. was all set to mount a rousing defense of Google+ as a social media tool worth greater interest from learning folks of all kinds. really was. Maybe one day you'll get to read that blog post, replete with breathy exhortations and compelling infographics.and then, I got distracted by something shiny and buzzy. colleague of mine who is headed to business school sent me this article , in which Robert F. THE LEARNING CIRCUITS BLOG | TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2012 Filtering: A Challenge and Responsibility for Learning Professionals In last week ’ s Learning Circuits, I explored how I use Twitter as a professional development tool , and explained how doing so has helped me build a personal learning network. Personal Learning Networks (PLN) are, in many ways, both the past and the future of how people will learn. Training and formal education are important, but people have always learned more from sharing with each other informally. Technology has finally reached a point where it is no longer a barrier to this sharing, and can actually amplify it. But with the new technologies are new challenges. ASTD is a great example. MORE >>
