5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

In 2011, I saw quite a few items that resonated. Kinect technology and gesture free will equally make an appearance in 2012. I am projecting that the number of vendors who enter this space to start slow, but gain steam – at least with some aspect, by the end of 2012. If you had to decide which of the following: AR or Kinect technology will be more widely used in 2012, I’m betting on Kinect technology. For the larger size vendors, I expect that by the end of 2012, to see a few systems drop their core learning features to 10% of their entire product.

The postman has just delivered my copy of Michael Allen's e-Learning Annual 2012 (when I was originally asked to contribute to this book it was going to be a 2011 annual, but that's traditional book publishing for you!). I'm a fan of Michael Allen. So I was delighted to accept his offer to add a chapter to this work. There are 27 chapters covering all aspects of e-learning. Hardly!

It's that time of year again so the 2011 Horizon Report has been released with some interesting insights on just how far we've come in a year. Last March Gartner predicted that smartphones would outsell PCs in 2012. But, just two months into 2011, it looks like smartphones are already outselling PCs. Smartphones by AJ George. In 2012 Apple announced the iPhone 5, two new iPads and the new iPad mini; Google unveiled their first tablet, the nexus 7 and later the 10″ version; Amazon gave us three Kindle Fire HD tablets. Here’s another statistic that bodes well for mobile, Apple sold more iPads in Q4 2011 than any individual PC manufacturer sold PCs.

There will be more types of devices and ways to connect with our mobile learning world in 2012. agree the technologies to create, deploy and manage HTML5-based mobile web apps will greatly improve in 2012 but I don't feel they will mature to the point they can replace all native apps – at least in most of the primary enterprise use cases for learning that’s managed and tracked.
